Most clients/accounts come with a default "automatically add sender to contacts".

Good point. I know that I don't have any contacts in either my Gmail or Yahoo! accounts. I think they're turned off entirely in Gmail. Yahoo! may ask me if I want to add someone to my contacts if I happen to send via the web interface.

I use iCloud for contacts. I figure that if Apple has a privacy issue, it's going to be an accident, unlike Google, whose privacy issues are often by design.

That is entirely possible as is the fact that a sender can be spoofed.

Yes, there was nothing in my "Sent" folder showing that any messages had been sent from my account.

If the malicious activity was recent, you may find a clue on your Yahoo! login activity page.

  1. Hover over your name (where it says "Hi Whomever!").
  2. Choose "Account Info" from the menu.
  3. You'll be taken to a sign-in page where you'll confirm your account password.
  4. Hit the "View your recent sign-in activity" link.
