Do you mean O/S versions? From what I've read (via Google) to go back to 4.4 (for example) it looks a bit complicated and I'd fear messing up. Better a slow working one that a bin jobby :)

Yes, as well as apps. I was under the impression a factory reset would take it back to the original OS. Maybe I was wrong? Never done any research.

I did a data reset rather than a system reset - same as auntiem posted. It left current OS but stripped apps and settings.

I'm not sure what the original OS version would have been. Maybe 4.2 ish? as in my lead post. 4.4 was ok apart from skype which is why i risked updating to lollipop 5.

I wouldnt know how to elect to install a specific pre-lollipop version.

I'm currently running Skype 7.39.0.194 on Android 4.1.2 without issue.

It would seem Android 4.4.4 is the most commonly recommended stock version. Alternatively, there is a tune-up guide for Android 5.

Whatever you do, even if that is nothing, it's gonna take time one way or another.

Followed the "tune-up guide" for 5 - did 90%, but couldn't find lots of the mentioned Google settings on the Nexus but did from my PC when signed in.

We'll see how it goes now. Thanks :)

Thus far t'is good.

I resisted installing apps I might use, just those I do use. Looking through the amount of dross apps I'd installed over the years in play store I wanted to purge these but couldn't find a delete button - then came across instructions how to do so, on device and NOT on pc. I share one google account between nexus and galaxy, and this works well.

Android still, v5.1.1 on Nexus 7 and on Galaxy J5

Problem - I view a web page that's definitely updated but still shows as was. (an old link has been hijacked (?) and now shows porn, which is why I'm keen to get rid of it)

Cannot delete Chrome cache, tried normal "from beginning of time". Googled and followed lots of suggestions but nowt work.

Including :

Wipe Cache Partition:

NOTE: If your phone doesn’t work as intended and you’re considering master resetting it, you should try clearing the cache partition first. Doing so can solve similar issues as a factory reset, without losing any of your personal data stored on the phone’s internal memory. To wipe the cache:

Turn off the phone
Press and hold “Volume Up”, “Home” and “Power” at the same time
Once the phone turns on and shows “Power”, release all hardware buttons
Roughly 30 seconds after the Android icon appears, your phone should boot in in Android System Recovery
From the recovery menu, press “Volume down” to highlight “wipe cache partition”
Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
Once the cache is wiped, “Reboot system now” will be highlighted
Press “Power” to reboot your phone

Galaxy has "home" button but Nexus doesn't. I tried this on Galaxy but it entered "safe mode"

I guess I could uninstall Chrome and then re-install (?), but I'd lose my bookmarks and I just hate re-entering these !!

Google "chrome export bookmarks" and "clean install chrome" to do what you intended.

How do you know the cache was not successfully cleared? This sounds more like a DNS hijack or a site that has been compromised.

Oh, 2 devices? See above^^. Check your router for rogue DNS settings and if they are at automatic, then likely the site has been compromised and you should contact the webmaster.

There's no export boomarks feature in chrome on android - I think.

You will know the site, I'll email you details.

Site ........ thanks. Ever felt stupid? no I guess you haven't. But I have (yet again :lol ) I'd have laid money on the fact that I'd ftp'd the updated file.

Bookmarks are in folders

Oh yeah! Happens all the time! LOL

In case it helps, perhaps you have (possibly inadvertently) set a default action for if a file exists. Edit > Settings > File exists action. Set both to "ask for action", and click OK (on left).

It's also possible you forgot to save your edits or something else like you kept a copy and essentially replaced the file with a duplicate and your settings were to retain the original date and time of the file.

I have settings as you recommend.

But I think you're right, I believe I updated file on flash stick but uploaded FTP from laptop HD (wrong location) :\

A "normal" conversation for me these days: «Shit happens!» «All good now!».
